Our classes are for everyone—from the beginning Photoshop user to the more advanced photographer who wants to better manage photo processing using Lightroom™. Classes are held in Buffalo and Rochester.

Winter/Spring 2012 Classes

Off-Camera Flash Workshop

TBA • 6:30 - 10:00 p.m.
Advantage Media Studio

This program focuses on off-camera flash in a variety of setups. Four hands-on stations will be set up:

  • Cable-tethered off-camera flash and effective bounce skills
  • Infrared controls built into your flash systems and multiple flashes along with ETTL controls
  • Radio controlled off-camera flash and high speed sync with radio controls. Including the new AC3 Pocket wizard controller
  • Quantum Lights in a multiple-light set-up and radio controls through the new Treo controller

The class will discuss and demonstrate techniques to balance your ambient light and flash source lights on subjects. We will discuss the advantages of radio controls over infrared and why and you may be having trouble with outdoor shoots and balancing your lights.

Bring your cameras and flashes to this hands-on learning experience. After a short lecture and demonstration at each station, you will be shooting and learning. This is one not to miss!

HDR for Profit

February 25th 2012 • 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Learn how to use HDR properly and allow your photographic creativity to expand. The blending of art and technical skills has never been more important for a photographer. This program will show you how to use the skill to make money in an untapped market in your community. We will explore all three major software programs capable of HDR processing: Photoshop CS5™, Photomatix™ and Nik Software HDR Pro™. We’ll analyze these programs and provide a comparison and unbiased opinion of each, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. In addition, you’ll learn about image processing and proper capture techniques.

Natural Light Portraiture

Portraiture in natural light done correctly has a softness that is unequaled; however you must know light in a very intimate manner to achieve results that are truly breathtaking. The Study of light and portraiture starts here. (Class size limited to 15 students.)

Photoshop I (8 week class)

January 30th 2012 (Last minute change) • 7:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. ends 3/19/2012

Photoshop classes are designed to take you well beyond image adjustment and simple color correction well into the more advanced design elements and functionality of Photoshop. You will learn advanced masking techniques and the ultimate control over your images with levels and curves. This course will progress you rapidly and logically to an advanced Photoshop user. Bring a laptop computer with Photoshop CS4 or CS5 to the class so that you can work along on each project. (Class size limited to 15 students.)

Photoshop Advanced Portraiture Touchup (4 week class)

This class will focus on advanced skills needed for pro level portraiture touchup. You must come the class equipped with a solid understanding of layers, masks, and brushes. You will learn skin touch up and softening techniques, eye makeup including but not limited to color and eye enhancement. Mascara and blush as well as eye lash construction and enhancing are taught. (Class size limited to 15 students.)

Photoshop Advanced Creative (4 week class)

This class will focus on advanced creative skills including the use of images to create backgrounds and geometric shapes and structures. We will explore the world of 3D and how to create objects from the gound up. You must come the class equipped with a solid understanding of layers, masks, and brushes. This class is designed for those who want to go beyond captured images to create art using Photoshop as a medium and or minds as the palette. (Class size limited to 15 students.)

Corel Painter II

Corel Painter is the premier program for creative artist that are looking to take their photography into a customized piece of hand painted art. You will learn to not only use the powerful auto paint functions available, more importantly you will explore your own creative genius and sense of color and depth to create truly inspiring images. Exploring Lightroom™ (4 week class)

Wednesdays, beginning January 18th, 2012 • 7:00 - 9:30 p.m. Ending 2/8/12

This Lightroom™ class will teach you how to maximize your workflow and create a systematic approach to all your digital imagery. There are systems that have been proven effective to rapidly and succinctly process large project (weddings etc.) shoots into manageable client-based results. We’ll show you the shortcuts and methods that work.

We will have live models to work with and you will learn to understand the relationship between light sources and how to control those lights to create beautifully dynamic images that step into the world as a true three dimensional image. Attendees are required to have working knowledge of Exposure Equivalents and light meters, as well as understand proper custom white balance. (Class size limited to 8 students.)

Studio Lighting Advanced (1 day class)

This class explores the realm of Studio Lighting with strobe lights. We will have live models to work with and you will learn to understand the relationship between light sources and how to control those lights to create beautifully dynamic images that step into the world as a true three dimensional image. Attendees are required to have working knowledge of Exposure Equivalents and light meters, as well as understand proper custom white balance. This class further explores numerous light modifiers, their application and uses, to include grids, flags, scrims, gobos, and reflectors to name a few. You will take lighting into the fascinating with 5 - 8 light sets that have balance and beauty at its core. (Class size limited to 8 students.)

Light Meters - how do they work and why we need them

January 27th 2012 •• 6:00 p.m.- 9:30 p.m.

Meters, meters and more meters, why don’t we just allow the camera decide? This class will show you why you need to have a better understanding of the light we use to capture images. We will explore metering modes in camera as well as the handheld meters that so many of you have heard about. How do we control the light if we are guessing at what is there? This and more is all part of this interesting and informative evening. This program will start you well on your way to understanding lighting ratios and is designed as a primer for the studio program the next day on the 28th of January.
